The VW Caddy California

The VW Caddy California

Since 2005, Volkswagen has started producing Caddy-based campervans. It’s now taken the next step and called this latest model the VW Caddy California, to match the bigger VW California and Grand California campers currently on the market. We’ve got all the official data, including the confirmation that the Caddy California will be available in the United Kingdom. Prices start at £29,965 when they go on sale in 2021.

The Volkswagen Caddy California is based on the all-new Caddy Cargo van, which went on sale in the United Kingdom in early 2021. The Caddy California replaces the previous Caddy Beach and has a number of additional amenities, including a kitchen, that seek to improve the camping experience in this little van.

The main features of the VW Grand California

The new Caddy California is the first VW campervan to be built on the company’s very adaptable MQB architecture, which, according to Volkswagen, allows for additional room and on-board electronics. The Caddy California is available in standard and longer Maxi body lengths, just like the van. The Caddy Cali’s’mini’ kitchen is likely to be the most appealing feature, as it is a new – albeit optional – addition for this model. This is fixed on a rail on the left side of the load area beneath the bed, which means it needs to be taken out under the tailgate to be utilised, which is uncommon on campers of this size. The cooking facilities appear to be at a comfortable working height, and the tailgate will do its best to keep the rain off. There are two sections to this storey. A single gas hob with wind screen and shelf is located at the top, while storage is located at the bottom. A secured container for the gas bottle is located at the back.

How good are the features of the Caddy California?

The price, which is around £80,000 if first-year road tax is added.. But we think that’s a bit of a false negative. You’re paying for a well-equipped base car, a powerful engine, and high-quality accessories that you won’t find in third-party conversions. And it’s not like competitors are cheap — expect to pay at least £50,000 for a high-quality Crafter conversion from a reputable company, with more if you want a strong engine or a lot of cab equipment.

How does the VW Caddy California drive?

The Caddy California is far less daunting to drive than its larger brethren if you’re coming from a conventional automobile. Smaller proportions – notably a shorter roof, which means you won’t have to worry about car-park height restrictions – and underpinnings that are comparable to those of a Golf mean it handles like a car. The handling is more quicker than in previous Caddy vans, and the ride comfort, owing to a new rear suspension design, is rather decent on uneven roads. The Caddy California is likely to be considerably more usable as a daily family car than a bigger California because of all of this – plus the five correct seats. In one of them, you won’t have any trouble getting to school or going shopping.

VW Caddy California Kitchen Space

The little kitchen space extends from the back of the van, beneath the tailgate, on two sets of incredibly strong rails that lock into place. The single-burner gas stove and a food preparation space are on the top rail, while storage with a built-in cutlery drawer is on the bottom rail.

The Caddy California isn’t as immediately suitable for a family getaway as its bigger cousins, with only two people sleeping in a relatively high-mounted bed that unfolds over the top of the rear seats, and only a single-burner gas stove ‘mini kitchen’ that slides out on rails from the boot of the van.
